SBU, National Police detain five Russian agents for detonating explosive device near main police department in Zhytomyr

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the National Police detained five agents of the Russian Federation who committed a terrorist attack in the central part of Zhytomyr on November 20 this year, they were notified of suspicion, the press service of the SBU reported.

"Then, as a result of the explosion, one law enforcement officer, who was at the scene that time, was injured. According to the case materials, the criminals acted on the order of the Russian special services, who recruited them through Telegram channels to search for ‘fast money,’" the SBU said in a Telegram message on Wednesday.

It is reported that in order to commit a terrorist attack, the defendants remotely detonated an improvised explosive device near the building of the local district police department. According to the instructions of the Russian curators, they filled the explosives with nails and disguised them in a thermos, and detonated them "remotely" using a mobile phone.

At the same time, agents installed hidden video cameras at the scene, which recorded the explosion in real time.

"All five terrorists, who acted separately from each other, were detained red-handed as a result of a special operation in the regional center. Among them is a 46-year-old Kharkiv resident who twice served a sentence for robbery," the SBU press service informs.

It is reported that the repeat offender, according to the instructions of the occupiers, bought components for explosives, which he then hid in a pre-agreed hiding place. Further, the enemy's tasks were performed by residents of Zhytomyr at the age of 15, 16, 18 and 20 years old. Two of them took these "components" from the cache and, according to the schemes provided to them, made an explosive device in a rented apartment. Two other accomplices installed video cameras near the state institution, planted explosives there and set it off.

During the searches, the components of the explosive device, SIM cards and mobile phones with evidence of the crime were seized from the detainees.

The investigators of the Security Service informed them of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (a terrorist act committed by prior agreement by a group of persons). The law breakers are kept in custody. They face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
