Sandu, Stoianoglo to stand in presidential runoff in Moldova

Incumbent Moldovan President Maia Sandu and former Moldovan Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo will stand in the presidential runoff, according to the preliminary election results published by the Moldovan Central Elections Commission (CEC) early on Monday morning.

Sandu gained 37.37% of the vote, and Stoianoglo gained 29%, after 89% of votes (1.25 million out of 1.56 million) were counted. Thus, they will stand in the runoff election due on November 3.

They are followed by Our Party leader Renato Usatii (13.77%), former head of Gagauzia Irina Vlah (6.05%), former prosecutor Victoria Furtuna (5.17%), and former prime ministers Vasile Tarlev and Ion Chicu, who gained 3.55% and 2.28% of the vote, respectively. Other candidates gained less than 1% of the vote. In all, 11 candidates ran for president in the Sunday election.

Almost 1.6 million voters, including about 240,000 abroad, cast their ballots. The voting continues in the United States and Canada.
