The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has asked the United Nations (UN) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to join the humanitarian response in the areas of Kursk region that are under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
"Ukraine, observing all the norms and principles of international humanitarian law and human rights, exercising effective control in certain areas of Kursk region, strictly observes its international obligations in the field of international humanitarian law, in particular on the protection of the civilian population during military operations... Ukraine confirms its strict observance of its international obligations in the aforementioned areas and is ready to provide all possible assistance to the activities of the UN and ICRC staff in the said territories," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The department reported that it had sent a corresponding note to the UN.
"From the first days of Kursk operation, the Ukrainian Defense Forces, as a civilized European army, demonstrated high professionalism and full compliance with the principles of international humanitarian law. Civilians in Kursk region have received and continue to receive humanitarian aid, basic humanitarian needs, and the opportunity to leave combat zones. Given the humanitarian situation and the need to properly ensure fundamental human rights in Kursk region, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry asked the UN to join the humanitarian response measures in the said territory and sent a corresponding note to the UN," the statement said.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also addressed a note to the ICRC as the guarantor of international humanitarian law with a request to take part in humanitarian response measures and monitor compliance with the principles of international humanitarian law in accordance with the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War of 1949," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported.
