Romanian govt approves bill on transfer of Patriot system to Ukraine
The Romanian government on Monday approved a bill allowing the transfer of the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system to Ukraine and sent it to parliament for a final vote.
As Romanian government spokesman Mihai Constantin reported at a briefing on Monday, the executive branch has approved and will urgently send to parliament a bill supplementing Law 222/2017 on ground-based air defense capabilities.
In particular, the draft stipulates that the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system is the subject of a "donation" to third parties. After the law is adopted by parliament, the government will be able to make a decision that will put the act of donation into effect. The entire executive branch is authorized to restore the country's ground and air defense capabilities at the expense of the budget allocated to the Ministry of National Defense.
As reported, in June 2024, members of the Supreme Council of National Defense of Romania, at a meeting chaired by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, decided to transfer the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine.
