More than 700 Ukrainian civilians injured as result of Russian shelling in April – UN

As a result of Russian shelling in April, more than 700 Ukrainian civilians were injured, mainly in Ukrainian-controlled territory, Lisa Doughten said at a Security Council meeting on Tuesday, speaking on behalf of the head of the UN Office of Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, Voice of America reports.

It is emphasized that the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights recorded more than 700 civilian casualties throughout Ukraine in April. Of these, 129 were killed and 574 were injured.

According to Doughten, for the second month in a row, there has been a significant increase in the number of wounded civilians. Some 90% of all civilian casualties occurred in Ukrainian-controlled territory.

She devoted most of her speech to the situation around Kharkiv, emphasizing that seven thousand civilians were evacuated from the border areas of Kharkiv region due to the Russian escalation of hostilities. Attention was focused on the infrastructure destroyed by Russian shelling, as well as the humanitarian situation.

In addition, the UN emphasized, Russia began to intensively destroy Ukrainian railways. In April alone, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights recorded ten attacks on railway infrastructure. As a result, 16 civilians were killed and another 59 were injured.
