14-year-old girl conquers Kilimanjaro for first time in Ukraine’s history
14-year-old Maria Sakharuk got into the Book of World Records, who climbed the highest point in Africa — Mount Kilimanjaro, with a height of 5,895 meters, becoming the youngest Ukrainian woman to reach this peak.
"I really want to dedicate this record and my ascent to all Ukrainians, who are fighting for us every day, defending the interests of our country every day. And they do it so that I, the youth of Ukraine, can then build the country we dream of and want it to be," she said at a press conference at the Interfax-Ukraine news agency on Thursday.
According to Sakharuk, the whole ascent took a week.
Kilimanjaro is the highest stratovolcano in Africa, located in the north-east of Tanzania, the highest point of the continent (5,895 m above sea level).
Hanna Krysiuk, director of the Book of World Records, noted that the story of 14-year-old Sakharuk is a good example for the whole world and the right representative of Ukraine.
"This shows that we are overcoming the peaks, we are uniting the world around helping Ukraine in various forms and from a very young age we are popularizing a healthy lifestyle. We set an example to others that the impossible is possible, even when everything is forbidden. And thanks to this, the Ukrainian flag flies on the highest peaks of the world, where not every country can climb, and overcomes these peaks," she commented.
According to Krysiuk, Sakharuk can also claim a world record, given all the difficulties and the war in Ukraine.
She also noted that the necessary legal confirmation was provided to document the record.
"We are making inquiries to all colleagues abroad, the service that gave the confirmation certificate, photos and videos. And the expert council takes this into account," she stressed.
Sakharuk, in turn, shared what other mountain peaks she dreams of conquering. So, the young athlete is already aiming for Mont Blanc in the Alps and several mountains in South America, including Machu Picchu.
