Justice Ministry in charge of drafting bill on transitional justice in de-occupied territories as stipulated by population reintegration strategy – Vereschuk

The bill on transitional justice in the de-occupied territories will be drawn up by the Justice Ministry of Ukraine, which is stipulated by a strategy for the restoration of state power and the reintegration of the population of the de-occupied territories for the period until 2026, which will soon be adopted, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Iryna Vereschuk, who is also the Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories, has said.

"One bill does not solve the problem. There are so many global problematic issues that it is simply impossible to fit them into one bill. And we took the path of writing a strategy, where we assigned each ministry, each central executive body their tasks. And there is a plan for the implementation of this strategy, and everyone understands who should do what and when, including the Justice Ministry, which must develop a bill on transitional justice and all these transitional periods on property, human rights, electoral law – this is all a transitional stage that must be worked out. Therefore, our first step is strategy," she told the Interfax-Ukraine News Agency at the 2nd summer school on international humanitarian law for government officials, organized by the Ukrainian Red Cross, on Monday.

According to the official, the strategy "has passed external approval" and is being prepared for submission to the Cabinet of Ministers for consideration.

"We must approve it in July," the Deputy Prime Minister said.

According to Vereschuk, Ukraine's international partners responded favorably to this approach and sequence – "first strategy, then legislative changes, then their implementation."

It was previously reported that the strategy would be adopted at the end of June 2024.
