Zelenskyy about Peace Summit: It's important to not let any other country to seize our initiative, especially Russia
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described the upcoming Peace Summit in Switzerland as "an already successful result" and stressed the importance of not letting anyone, especially Russia, seize Ukraine's initiative.
"This meeting is already a result. It is very difficult to not lose the alliance, the state, the partners. And an alliance of partners and non-partners is, in principle, a complicated mission. In general, for Ukraine, as the war goes on, and it is not the first month [of the war]," he said at a joint press conference with Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz in Berlin on Tuesday.
The head of state also said that the Peace Summit, which will be hosted by Switzerland on June 15-16, does not mean the establishment of peace and the end of the war.
"This is a path. Unfortunately. But we will overcome obstacles. I am sure about this. We will achieve peace. But this is step one. And it is very important," he said.
Zelenskyy also noted that at the same time "as you know, some meetings at various levels are organized on the territory of Russia. The ministers for foreign affairs of many countries, BRICS and so on. [The meetings are organized] with the aim of building another initiative."
"So, the second story is to not let any other country seize the initiative, because that would be unfair. Because we are in war. And we have the full right [to promote our vision of ending the war]," he said.
The Ukrainian head of state once again emphasized that "we are really open. If we want to unite a large number of countries worldwide, we must hear them. Because people will not just silently join in some initiative. We need to find a comprehensive solution to unite such a number of countries."
"I think that 100 countries from the entire world will be represented at the inaugural Peace Summit. And it is important to not lose the initiative. And to not simply give it in to someone, like Russia. Because Russia has demonstrated its initiative regarding its vision of ending the war. It was demonstrated on the day of its full-scale invasion. Their vision is the occupation of our country," Zelenskyy said.
"That is why we all have to work. Really hard. And keep our fingers crossed to make it work," he said.
