Ukraine demands from Russia immediate implementation of IAEA resolution on return of ZNPP
Ukraine demands that Russia immediately implement the resolution of the IAEA Board of Governors of March 7 on the urgent return of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant under its full control and will insist on strengthening sanctions in case of non-compliance, Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Haluschenko has said.
"We demand from Russia the immediate implementation of the resolution of the IAEA Board of Governors, and in case of refusal, we will insist on strengthening sanctions," Haluschenko said during the United News telethon, the words of which are quoted in the ministry’s release on Friday.
According to him, given that compliance with international documents is Russia's weak side, "we will push the issues of sanctions accordingly."
"The resolution fixes the entire list of problematic issues that accumulated during the occupation of the Zaporizhia NPP. The key message that we convey to the world community and, in particular, to the IAEA Board of Governors: every day the Russians stay at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant increases the number of these problems and activates the threat of a nuclear incident," he said.
He added that Ukraine became a member of the IAEA Board of Governors for the first time after a 13-year break, and the adoption of the resolution proposed by our delegation is an important achievement.
"We have two years when we will be represented in the Board of Governors. There are 35 countries in this body. It forms the key areas of the IAEA's activities. Considering what the Russians have done with nuclear energy in Ukraine, it is very important that our voice will be directly to attend. The voting showed that the entire civilized world is with us," Haluschenko said.
