Japan hands over 3 autotransformers worth more than $20 million to Ukrenergo
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has handed over three powerful autotransformers with a total value of over $20 million to National Power Company (NPC) Ukrenergo as part of the "Emergency Recovery and Reconstruction Project," the system operator announced on Friday.
"This is not the first time we have received donor assistance in the form of scarce and expensive high-voltage equipment from our Japanese partners. Given the consequences of Russia’s massive attacks, these powerful autotransformers delivered late last year are extremely necessary for the Ukrainian power system," noted Vitaliy Zaichenko, Chairman of the Management Board of NPC Ukrenergo.
For his part, the head of the JICA office in Ukraine, Osamu Hattori, expressed his respect for the Ukrenergo team’s technical excellence.
"We deeply admire the resilience and technical excellence of the Ukrenergo team. JICA is committed to continuing its assistance to improve the reliability, security, and long-term sustainability of Ukraine’s energy system," he emphasized.
As explained by Ukrenergo, the logistics for this type of cargo—such as the specified autotransformers—is a very complex process, primarily due to the dimensions of the load. Each of the three transformers weighs nearly 200 tons, stands 4.5 meters high, and is almost 4 meters wide.
"Taking into account the dimensions of the transport platform and the weight of the tractor unit itself, the route is mapped out to bypass many bridges over or under which passage is impossible," the NPC noted.
