59-year-old entrepreneur detained in Kyiv for directing Russia shelling under cover of defense orders - SBU

The State Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has detained another spotter who directed Russia shelling on Kyiv—a 59-year-old entrepreneur recruited by the FSB who was engaged in the production of armored glass for Defense Forces vehicles.

"According to SBU cyber specialists, he was preparing a series of Russia air attacks on domestic companies that repair military transport and modernize its tactical and technical characteristics," the SBU informed via its Telegram channel on Wednesday.

According to the Ukrainian intelligence service, to identify the locations of such enterprises, the individual visited their addresses under the guise of concluding contracts for the production of armored glass and coordinating the technical tasks for relevant orders.

"In reality, while on the territory of the defense companies, he marked the geolocations of the objects, including technological workshops, on Google Maps," the agency clarified.

Furthermore, as noted by the SBU, the individual was supposed to purchase and covertly install mini-cameras with remote access functions on the territories of potential "targets" for the Russian special services.

"With the help of disguised video devices, the Russians hoped to track the consequences of the planned attacks on Ukrainian facilities," the intelligence service emphasized.

SBU employees exposed the agent in advance, documented his contacts with the FSB, and detained him at his place of residence. Simultaneously, comprehensive measures were taken to secure the defense companies.

The investigation established that the individual came to the attention of the occupiers when he published pro-Kremlin comments in Telegram channel chats.

During searches, a smartphone and computer equipment containing evidence of his work for the enemy were seized.

"Contracts with the enterprises that he tried to target with Russian weapons were also found in the detainee’s possession," the SBU highlighted.

Based on the collected evidence, SBU investigators informed the agent of a suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (state treason committed under martial law).

The perpetrator is in custody without the right to bail.

Comprehensive measures were carried out by SBU officers under the procedural guidance of the Kyiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

The SBU once again reminds citizens: "If you or your acquaintances are being recruited by the enemy, or if you have information about the possible activities of Russian special services, report it to the SBU: chat-bot ‘Burn the FSB agent’ – t.me/spaly_fsb_bot, tel.: 0 800 501 482, Email: callcenter@ssu.gov.ua"
