US security guarantees for Ukraine include military response to new Russian attack – Tusk
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is satisfied with the outcome of the Ukrainian-American talks in Berlin with the participation of European partners, including the strengthening of security guarantees that can be provided to Ukraine and the closeness of the partners' positions.
"For the first time, I heard from American negotiators that America will deal with security guarantees for Ukraine in such a way that the Russians have no doubt that the American response will be military if they attack Ukraine again," Tusk said on a plane on Tuesday night en route from Berlin to Helsinki, where the EU Eastern Flank summit will be held on Tuesday.
According to a post posted on social media by the Prime Minister's Office, the Americans are convinced that with their participation there is an opportunity to create serious security guarantees for Ukraine, the Polish Prime Minister added.
"The breakthrough is that, perhaps for the first time, it has become so clear that Ukraine, the Americans and the Europeans are on the same wavelength. Even greater pressure is needed to demonstrate that we will not allow ourselves to be divided as the West. It is extremely important that we, together with the Americans and the Ukrainians, act as allies so that the Russians see that it is impossible to drive a wedge between these three sides," Tusk said.
He noted that Poland would definitely not put any pressure on Ukraine to make any concessions.
"This should be a decision based on the calculations and assessments of the Ukrainians themselves. Security guarantees for Ukraine are also, in a sense, security guarantees for Poland. Ukraine, which is threatened with renewed aggression, would pose a great risk to Poland and other countries located near the front," Tusk said.
In his opinion, the efforts made by the group of European leaders have borne fruit.
"The only chance to convince Russia to start serious negotiations to end the war or at least a ceasefire is to unite the entire West," Tusk said.
