Investigations show that anti-corruption bodies in Ukraine are able to function – European Commission
The European Commission is closely following the anti-corruption investigations in Ukraine, including the searches of the head of the Office of the President Andriy Yermak, European Commission spokesman Guillaume Mercier said on Friday.
"We have seen the news about today’s searches by the National Anti-corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO). Our position is well known: any investigations show that anti-corruption bodies in Ukraine exist and are able to function. The fight against corruption is a central element of our enlargement package, which defines our common position on this issue. I would like to emphasize that the fight against corruption is a key factor for the country’s accession to the European Union. It requires continuous efforts to ensure a strong capacity to fight corruption and uphold the rule of law," he said, commenting on today’s searches by the NABU and SAPO.
Mercier added that "the Commission will continue to closely monitor the situation."
