UK to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities in case of peace, to send contingent there – Starmer

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirms plans to assemble a coalition of the willing to ensure the implementation of any peace agreement on Ukraine, where the UK is going to take a leading role.

At a press conference following the Ukraine summit in London on Sunday, the Prime Minister stated that important steps had been agreed upon. He explained that, first, military assistance would continue, and economic pressure on Russia would be increased to strengthen Ukraine. Second, it was agreed that any lasting peace must ensure Ukraine's sovereignty and security, with Ukraine being part of the discussions. Third, in the event of a peace agreement, efforts would be made to further develop Ukraine’s defense capabilities to deter any future invasion.

Fourth, the Prime Minister emphasized that it was agreed to continue developing a "coalition of the willing" to protect the agreement in Ukraine and guarantee peace.

At a press conference, Sir Keir Starmer acknowledged that not every nation would feel able to contribute, but emphasized that this did not mean they would be inactive. He stated that those who are able to contribute would step up their planning with real urgency. He assured that the UK stood ready to support the efforts with "boots on the ground and planes in the air," alongside other nations, and stressed that Europe must do the hard work.

The British Prime Minister also highlighted that, for peace on the continent to be sustained and successful, strong support from the U.S. was essential. He mentioned that the UK had been working with the U.S. on this issue since his meeting with President Trump the previous week. Starmer made it clear that the UK and the President agreed on the urgent need for a lasting peace.
