EU should resolve issue of liberalizing trade with Ukraine considering interests of local farmers – Hungarian minister

The Agriculture and Fisheries Council of the European Union will have to consider in the next six months the regulation on Ukrainian agricultural imports, which expires in June, taking into account the interests of European farmers, said Hungarian Agriculture Minister Istvan Nagy.

"Among the trade issues, there will also be a regulation on Ukrainian imports, which expires in June. Brussels must understand that protecting European producers is crucial. Hungary continues to comply with the import ban (of Ukrainian agricultural products) and protect EU resources due to farmers," he wrote on Facebook after handing over powers to Polish Agriculture Minister Czeslaw Siekierski, who will lead the Council in January-June of this year.

Among the important issues that the Polish minister presented to the Council, Nagy noted the improvement of the position of farmers in the food chain and the simplification of the Common Agricultural Policy.

"In accordance with the conclusions adopted during the Hungarian presidency, we are also working on simplifying the Common Agricultural Policy. Urgent measures are needed to simplify the excessive bureaucracy," the Hungarian minister emphasized.
