Since beginning of year, 55 people died in fires in Ukraine, another 31 injured – service

As a result of domestic fires in the first six days of 2025, some 55 people have died, while 31 people have been injured, press officer of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine Oleksandr Khorunzhy said during a briefing titled "Safety of citizens during the Christmas and New Year holidays" on Wednesday.
According to operational data, from December 31 to January 6, 2025, some 865 fires were recorded in Ukraine, which is 32% more than in the same period of 2024, then there were 653 fires, Khorunzhy said.
"On January 1, 2025 alone, 14 people died in fires, while last year there were seven. This is 100% more than last year. Thus, in Poltava region, two people died due to a short circuit in the electrical network, including a child. Another two people died in Cherkasy region. In Kharkiv region, two men died during a fire in an outbuilding at a cemetery due to a violation of fire safety rules when using a stove," he said.
In December 2024, some 756 fires were recorded caused by improper use of stoves and heating devices, which is a fifth of the total number of fires. Since the beginning of 2025, there have been three cases of carbon monoxide poisoning due to the use of stoves, gas water heaters and stove heating.
"Eight people were injured, including five children," Khorunzhy said.
According to the emergency medical service, in December 2024, 11 cases of carbon monoxide poisoning were recorded, which led to the death of five adults, and six more victims received medical care.
Khorunzhy said the main causes of fires include: short circuits in the electrical network, violation of the rules for using heating devices, careless handling of fire, in particular smoking in bed while intoxicated.
