Ukraine will have to hold 'discussions on territorial issues,' Europe will give it security guarantees – Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron believes that Ukrainians will have to "hold realistic discussions on territorial issues" in order to find a solution to end the war with Russia.
"Only they (Ukrainians) can conduct them (discussions)," Macron said at a meeting with French ambassadors on Monday.
The head of the French state also said that the Russian-Ukrainian war "will not have a quick and easy solution," despite the promises of US President-elect Donald Trump to quickly end the war.
"The new American president himself knows that the United States has no chance of winning anything if Ukraine loses... Ukraine's capitulation cannot be good for Europeans and Americans," the French president said, adding that the authority of Western countries would be undermined if they agreed to a compromise due to "fatigue" from the war in Ukraine.
He also said that the United States must convince Russia to sit down at the negotiating table, and EU countries will need to "build security guarantees (for Ukraine), which will be their main responsibility."
The French president also said that EU countries must strengthen their defense industries in the face of growing threats. "The question is whether Europeans want to produce what is necessary for their security over the next 20 years or not... If we depend on the American industrial and technological defense base, we will have cruel dilemmas and criminal strategic dependencies," he said.
