Ukrainian parliamentarian, leader of European Solidarity party Petro Poroshenko, who is paying a visit to Washington, discussed with the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Affairs and former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt the urgent energy needs of our state, the political force said on its website.

"The continuous massive strikes of the Russian aggressor on the Ukrainian critical infrastructure clearly demonstrate Russia's true intentions - to destroy the domestic energy sector and turn Ukraine into an energy desert in the center of Europe," Poroshenko wrote on his Facebook page.

"We also paid attention to the issues of strengthening Ukraine's stability, democratic development and the rule of law, fundamental freedoms, primarily in the context of necessary reforms on the way to the EU and NATO," Poroshenko said.

The leader of European Solidarity also met with Christopher Smith, U.S. Under Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs.

"I told about the current situation at the front and the urgent needs of the Ukrainian army, taking into account the requests I receive weekly from the fighters. We have also coordinated approaches to strengthening Ukraine's long-term stability," Poroshenko said.

"We separately discussed possible strategies for Ukraine's victory and ending the war and ensuring the international responsibility of the aggressor. He expressed conviction that the best guarantee of security for Ukraine remains our country's membership in NATO, because any other approaches will not ensure peace, security and stability in Europe," Poroshenko said.

In Washington, Poroshenko is to take part in the summit of the International Democratic Union (IDU) at the invitation of IDU Chairman, former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Within the framework of the visit, separate bilateral meetings are planned between Poroshenko and the leadership of the U.S. State Department, the Ministry of Defense, members of Congress, representatives of expert and analytical centers of the United States.
