Klitschko, Scholz discuss military support for Ukraine, invitation to NATO
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko met with German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who visited the Ukrainian capital on Monday, and noted the need to strengthen military support for Ukraine from Germany and other international partners, Kyiv City State Administration said on its website.
"During the conversation, I emphasized that specific actions in support of Ukraine by Germany and other partners need to be strengthened, because the situation at the front is critical. That is why I once again asked the German Chancellor to provide Ukraine with Taurus missiles. Together with the missile systems received from the United States, Great Britain and France, they are capable of improving the military situation and strengthening Ukraine's position. Ukraine must have strong negotiating positions," Klitschko said after the meeting.
He noted the importance of not giving in to blackmail from Vladimir Putin, in particular nuclear, "if we want peace and stability to return to Europe." "We need to not just end the war. But on such conditions that the national interests of Ukraine are not affected. Otherwise, peace will be an illusion, a pause before new aggression from Russia," the mayor of the Ukrainian capital said.
He also stressed that reliable security guarantees must be a necessary condition for any diplomatic agreements. "The only real guarantee of Ukraine's security is its membership in NATO. The whole of Ukraine, not just part of its territory, must receive an invitation to membership. Without Ukraine, building a new, effective security system in Europe is impossible," Klitschko said.
