URCS social assistants provide over 719,000 services to elderly people over month

Social assistants of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS) made almost 90,000 visits to their wards in a month.

"Social assistants of the Home Care direction of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society take care of their wards every day, helping them with household chores. In September of this year alone, they made about 90,000 visits and provided over 719,000 services to lonely elderly people," the communications and marketing department of the National Committee of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society reported.

Social assistants help clean the house, cook food, change bed linen. They also accompany grandparents to the doctor, buy and deliver food, water and other goods, pay utility bills and take their wards for walks. There are currently 1,300 social assistants working at the URCS.

"In this assistance, in addition to professional competence, the humanity and compassion of our social workers play a significant role. In addition to performing their direct job responsibilities, the girls often make friends with their wards, try to help them solve other life problems and diversify their leisure time. For most of them, this is not only work, but also an opportunity to realize their best ... qualities," said Zoya Pohorila, head of the Home Care Department of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society.

The URCS also actively cooperates with the Ministry of Social Policy. A Memorandum was recently signed, which plans to introduce new social services and develop programs for psychosocial support of the population.
