Almost 85% of people confirm fluent level of Ukrainian proficiency during launch of exam – commission

 Since the launch of the exam for the level of proficiency in the state language for the performance of official duties, some 84.3% of people have confirmed their fluent level of Ukrainian language proficiency, the National Commission on State Language Standards said.

In particular, according to the data of the National Commission, which were presented at a briefing on Wednesday, since the launch of the exam for the level of proficiency in the state language, some 261,778 people have passed it: some 84,274 people in 2021, some 63,323 people in 2022, some 72,705 people in 2023, and some 41,474 people in the first ten months of 2024.

Thus, some 259,794 people passed the exam to perform their official duties (some 83,870 in 2021, some 62,578 in 2022, some 71,983 in 2023, and some 41,363 in the first ten months of 2024), and 1,984 people passed the exam to obtain Ukrainian citizenship (406 in 2021, some 745 in 2022, some 711 in 2023, and some 111 in the first ten months of 2024).

Among those who passed the exam to perform their official duties, some 84.3% showed a free level of language proficiency, and 15.7% needed to improve their level of proficiency in the state language.

As reported, on November 6, 2019, the Cabinet of Ministers created the National Commission on State Language Standards.

On July 16, 2021, the provision of the law On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language came into force on the exam for the level of proficiency in the state language in accordance with the new standards developed by the National Commission on State Language Standards, which is necessary for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship, as well as for applicants for positions in state authorities or local governments.
