UN Secretary-General should've handed arrest warrant to Putin – Nobel laureate Matviychuk
During his trip to Russia's Kazan for the BRICS summit, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres should have handed Vladimir Putin an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), Head the Center for Civil Liberties, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Oleksandra Matviychuk has said Friday.
At the 10th Kyiv Security Forum for Youth, organized by Arseniy Yatsenyuk's Open Ukraine Foundation, Matviychuk said Guterres should have handed Putin the arrest warrant, since the ICC is part of the UN collective security system, which was created in the last century.
She emphasized that the world order based on the UN Charter and international law was crumbling before everyone's eyes, so it is necessary to reform the UN.
The Nobel laureate pointed out that the UN security system was created after World War II by the victorious states, which laid down privileges for themselves in it.
She also said that Russia, which not quite legally took the place of the Soviet Union, received these privileges, including a veto, which gives it the ability to paralyze the work of the UN Security Council. Therefore, this system is still dysfunctional and collapsing, Matviychuk emphasized.
The Kyiv Security Forum for Youth is the leading platform for engaging young leaders in discussions on national security and international relations.
