Kyiv region launches modern ecological waste recycling
In Borodianka, Kyiv region, with the help of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), recycling of construction waste generated as a result of Russian armed aggression will be launched in November, First Deputy Chairman of Kyiv Regional Administration Mykola Boiko told Interfax-Ukraine.
"In Kyiv region, as a result of military operations and constant attacks by the enemy, there are now about 4,000 destroyed objects that need to be completely dismantled and subsequently restored. According to the government agreement between Japan and Ukraine, in 2023 we received the appropriate equipment for processing construction waste, after training personnel and debugging technological processes, we are launching an industrial line for its processing," Boiko said.
He recalled that after the de-occupation of Kyiv region, the dismantling of destroyed buildings began, in general, such construction waste was collected at 33 temporary storage sites for waste from destruction in the liberated communities. To solve this problem, a municipal enterprise was created that will be engaged in the processing of such construction waste.
In accordance with the program, Kyiv region received 39 units of special machinery and equipment from JICA, four of which were transferred to Irpin community, and three to Sumy. The launch of the equipment and the adjustment of technologies were accompanied by JICA experts, all employees were trained and certified.
Borodianka was chosen for the pilot launch of the recycling line. Here, materials from the temporary storage sites for construction waste of the Makarivka and Borodianka communities will be processed.
"The government recently decided to expand the comprehensive restoration program for Borodianka, funding is provided not for 20 pilot sites, but for 78, some of which still need to be dismantled. That is why we are placing this special equipment in Borodianka, we will dismantle and immediately recycle construction waste at this site, which will significantly speed up the process," Boiko explained the choice.
According to his estimates, up to 200,000 tonnes of construction waste have already been dismantled in Kyiv region, and it is still necessary to dismantle destroyed objects with a total volume of about 100,000 tonnes. The projected volume of destruction waste that will be recycled in 2024 is approximately 15,000-20,000 tonnes. In 2025, it is planned to recycle more than 50,000 tonnes.
"This is truly the first full-fledged cycle of recycling of construction waste in Ukraine, according to the strictest world standards. Everything is provided - from asbestos analyzers to dust suppression systems, noise insulation and generators in case of power outage. The selection and sorting of material for subsequent recycling has been worked out. Before the launch, there was an on-site inspection by the Japanese side. We all protested finally, from Monday we will begin continuous recycling," Boiko said.
At the first stage, all types of fractions will be used for road backfill. The option of further use as raw material for construction materials is also being considered, negotiations are underway with a number of large organizations. But for this, according to Boiko, it is necessary to obtain state standards for such materials, the Administration has already contacted the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Ministry of Economy on this matter.
