Duda speaks out against blocking Ukraine's accession to EU due to Volyn tragedy

Polish President Andrzej Duda said that attempts to block Ukraine's accession to the European Union play into the hands of Putin's policy. He said this while commenting on the statement by Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz that Ukraine cannot join the EU without resolving the Volyn issue.

"I tried to act in a way that would avoid creating tensions between Warsaw and Kyiv as much as possible. It was not easy, because there are difficult issues between us. But I also discussed these issues with President Zelenskyy, and the best example of this was the president's presence in Lutsk on the anniversary of the Volyn massacre," Duda said, Polsat News reports.

"Finding agreement with us on all difficult issues, including historical ones, is also in Ukraine's interests. Please remember that Ukrainians have many problems with the past since World War II," he added.

Duda pointed out that Putin attacked Ukraine to stop its integration into the EU.

"If someone says on this matter that they will block Ukraine's access to the European Union, then they are thus in line with Vladimir Putin's policy. Well, I don't know if this is the intention of the current government," he noted.

"I would like to know what exactly the ministers and prime ministers mean when they make such statements. These are complex issues, including those that Ukrainians themselves have been silent about for years, and which need to be taken into account," Duda added.
