Prosecutor General: Russian Air Force Commander involved in strikes on Okhmatdyt in Kyiv
The Commander of the Russian Air Force is involved in organizing and carrying out a missile strike on the Okhmatdyt children's hospital in Kyiv, the investigation into this case is being coordinated with the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said.
"The Prosecutor General's Office, together with investigators from the Security Service of Ukraine, have identified one of those involved in organizing and committing this war crime - this is a lieutenant general of the Russian Armed Forces, former commander of the long-range aviation of the Air Force of the Aerospace Forces of the Russian Armed Forces, who is currently the commander of the Russian Air Force and deputy commander-in-chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces (Sergey Kobylash)," Kostin told journalists on Tuesday in Kyiv on the territory of the Okhmatdyt clinic, where he arrived together with the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan.
According to Kostin, the investigation established that it was this general who, on July 8, 2024, at about 10:45, ordered the units subordinate to him to carry out a strike (on Okhmatdyt) using a T-95MS bomber-launcher with an X-101 cruise missile on the premises of the Okhmatdyt hospital.
The Prosecutor General recalled that this enemy strike on Okhmatdyt resulted in the death of two civilians - a doctor and the grandfather of a little patient at the hospital, and another 34 civilians, including nine children, were injured.
"Based on the collected evidence, the said representative of the command of the aggressor country was notified of suspicion under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine [violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder]," the Prosecutor General emphasized.
He drew attention to the fact that the Prosecutor General's Office is already investigating the case against this same officer and the ICC has already issued a warrant for his arrest for shelling energy infrastructure - not only for committing war crimes, but also crimes against humanity.
"We are coordinating all our actions in this case with the ICC Prosecutor's Office and are considering all possible interactions, starting with providing the materials of our case to transferring this case to the ICC," Kostin said.
He expressed confidence that the results of the national investigation "will only strengthen the base prepared by the ICC Prosecutor's Office."
Also, as the Prosecutor General emphasized, the Ukrainian investigation continues to collect evidence of the involvement of other persons in the strikes on Okhmatdyt.
"We are systematically working with the ICC and are ready to provide all necessary information and evidence regarding this suspect and any other crimes of the Russian Federation committed against Ukrainians and Ukraine," Kostin concluded.
