Poroshenko lists 'red lines' for Ukraine in Berlin
There can be no compromises regarding sovereignty, territorial integrity, or democracy in Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko said during his speech at the Berlin conference with leading politicians from key parties in Germany, the United States, Great Britain, and other countries.
"I can say that Ukraine's victory is five 'no's.' Because any compromise on any of these five points will not bring victory. Firstly, no compromises regarding our independence, no compromises regarding our sovereignty. Because that would be Putin's victory. Secondly, no compromise regarding Ukraine's territorial integrity. No compromise in someone's attempts to exchange territory for peace. This definitely does not work. This clearly destroys international law, the entire post-war security system. And this is unacceptable," Poroshenko emphasized.
"Thirdly, no compromises on the Ukrainian army in exchange for security. Because Ukraine has the most combat-ready and best-trained Armed Forces on the continent. And every Ukrainian soldier on the front line is absolutely sure that he is fighting for the security of Europe, and not just for Ukrainian territory and security," Poroshenko is convinced. "Fourthly, no compromises regarding sanctions and responsibility of the aggressor. And once again: no compromises regarding Ukraine's membership in NATO," Petro Poroshenko noted.
"I can also voice one more uncompromising one. Please, no compromises on democracy in Ukraine. No 'controlled democracy' in the style of Putin. No autocracy in Ukraine. No lack of the rule of law. No lack of freedom of the press. No lack of freedom of people. No lack of parliamentary pluralism. So, once again: no compromises on democracy in Ukraine," the leader of the European Solidarity summed up.
