Border with Belarus completely sealed in Zhytomyr region – military administration head

Head of Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration Vitaliy Bunechko assesses as "very low" the probability of an enemy attack on Ukraine through Zhytomyr region, as the border is well-protected, including by fortifications, and very heavily mined.

"The border with the Republic of Belarus in Zhytomyr region is fully sealed!" he said in an exclusive interview with the Interfax-Ukraine News Agency.

According to the official, the fortification works are 99% complete.

"In some places the builders are correcting their 'mistakes', in some places we are conducting an expert examination to make sure of the quality, in some sections we need to sign the acts of completed works and pay in full," he said.

"Our fortifications are fully ready, and in case someone wants to come in from the northern border, our platoon, company strongholds, obstacle lines are ready to meet the enemy," the head of Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration said.

He recalled that the work on the construction of a deeply echeloned line of defense in the north of the region has not stopped for a second since the beginning of February 2022.

"At first, we built it without a nationwide concept of defense line, and now – with a common one, which extends from Volyn to Kharkiv region – a completely unified defense line. Now there are already new projects and recommendations from the military side, how to make our border and the region a hell trap for the enemy," Bunechko said.

The official noted that he is very calm about the latest statements of "under-president" of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko about the transfer of troops closer to the Ukrainian border.

"We are following the situation very closely and are ready for dynamic changes. There are norms, there are military strategies, what should happen in case of movements. And as for these statements [by Lukashenko] specifically, I think it is said for the citizens of that state [Belarus] to make them feel some confidence after the events in Kursk region," Bunechko said.

In his opinion, Belarus is well aware of the current strength of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), so the neighbors do not want to participate in the war.

"If someone wants to throw something from the Republic of Belarus, we will transfer much farther. Because we already know how to do it, while they still need to learn it," he said.

The head of the regional military administration said that the northern border, where the construction of fortifications is almost 100% complete (not only on the first line, but also several steps further), and settlements in the north of Zhytomyr region are really protected.

"I am very pleased when I am in the north of the region that our people feel confidence in the future there. For example, in Ovruch, and this is probably the largest settlement, which is so close to the border, they send children to a newly built kindergarten – life is booming, and this is very important," Bunechko said.
