Ukraine to open humanitarian corridors between Sumy, Kursk regions for civilian evacuation – Vereschuk
Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereschuk, who is also the Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine, has said it is planned to open humanitarian corridors between Sumy and Kursk regions for the evacuation of civilians in both directors towards Ukraine and Russia.
"In order to protect the border regions of Ukraine [primarily the border area of Sumy region], the Ukrainian defense forces are creating a security zone on the territory of the Russian Federation adjacent to the territory of Ukraine. There are Russian civilians within this zone. They are protected by international humanitarian law, which Ukraine fully complies with," she said on the Telegram channel Wednesday.
According to the official, it is planned to conduct by efforts of the Ukrainian military humanitarian operations to support civilians within this zone; open humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians: both towards Russia and towards Ukraine; allow international humanitarian organizations into this zone for the purpose of humanitarian response and monitoring the humanitarian situation.
Vereschuk also noted that the relevant preparations and consultations are currently underway.
