EU's stance on Ukraine's actions on Russian territory: Ukraine has lawful right to defend itself
The European Union notes that Brussels does not comment on Kyiv's actions on the front line, but says it fully supports its actions in legitimate self-defense against the Russian aggressor.
So in Brussels on Thursday, Peter Stano, press secretary of the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, commented on the latest reports on the fighting of the Ukrainian side on the territory of Kursk region of the Russian Federation, answering a question from journalists. “Based on international law, Ukraine has a right to defend itself, and this right to defend itself includes also hitting the enemy on his territory,” he said, noting that the EU does not comment on developments on the battlefield, as it does not participate in them.
Stano stated that the EU “is fully standing behind Ukraine's efforts to restore its territorial integrity and sovereignty and to push back and fight the illegal aggression by Russia.” “Our position is set out in a number of Council conclusions, conclusions of the European Council, and this position is not changing since February 2022. It's full support for Ukraine in its legitimate self-defence against the aggression, and our support includes political, financial, humanitarian, diplomatic, and military assistance, and nothing is changing on this, as has been confirmed most recently during the June European Council,” the representative of the EU Foreign Diplomatic Service reminded.
In addition, Stano said that the EU is in constant contact with the Ukrainian side, and not only since the beginning of a full-scale invasion by Russia, but also earlier.
Earlier, the media reported on the fighting that began in the border area of Kursk region. Ukraine has not officially commented on this information.
