Zelenskyy on presidential elections: If war drags on, it will be necessary to look for tools
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that no one will agree to a war that will last another 10 years or more, however, if it drags on, then it will be necessary to look for tools for holding presidential elections.
"Firstly, no one will agree to a war that will last another 10 years or many years. It is very difficult. Difficult for the world, difficult for everyone. And I think it is impossible. This is the first thing. The second thing is that there will be many victims then. There are already a lot of them, and there will be a way more. This cannot be allowed," Zelenskyy said in an interview with the BBC, the full version of which was published on Sunday.
At the same time, he noted that "I would gladly hold elections if it were possible."
"We will do everything to ensure that the war does not drag on. But if it drags on, we will need to find a solution. I don't know what yet. It's difficult because these are changes to the Constitution of Ukraine. The Constitution cannot be changed during a war. It is impossible to hold elections during a war," Zelenskyy said.
"There needs to be observers in the trenches. No observers will come to the trenches. Next, we have people in the occupied territories. That means they won't vote. How will they vote? Who will control this process? And we have even more than 7 million (people) abroad. How can they vote? That is, the question is that people who are fighting at the front for democracy will not have democratic presidential elections," he added.
In any case, the president emphasized, "if the war drags on, it will be necessary to look for tools."
Answering the question whether there could be a transfer of powers, Zelenskyy stated positively about this possibility, but noted that this would happen "after the war."
