Sweden intends to allocate SEK 5 mln to help those affected by Russian strike on Okhmatdyt
The Swedish government is supporting the affected Ukrainian families after the missile attack on Kyiv Children's Hospital and is preparing a decision to allocate an additional SEK 5 million (more than $470,000) for emergency humanitarian assistance in addition to the measures already being implemented.
According to the Swedish government's website, a decision is being prepared to provide an additional SEK 5 million in emergency humanitarian aid for the ongoing response. This support will be channeled through UNICEF directly to affected children and their families.
"Yet another humanitarian boundary was transgressed when Russian missiles targeted sick children. Sweden stands united with Ukraine against these horrific attacks," Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Johan Forssell said.
In the coming days and weeks, UNICEF will provide approximately SEK 2,800 per person in cash support to the families of the 627 children who were in hospital at the time of the attack. Sweden is preparing a decision on additional support to be able to contribute to these efforts. UNICEF will also assist in the reconstruction of the hospital, but is awaiting an assessment of the needs of the hospital and local authorities.
There were 627 children in the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital in Kyiv when it was attacked on July 8. The attack damaged 70 percent of the hospital, including operating rooms, intensive care units and oncology wards.
The government said Sweden is a major donor to UNICEF.
