Electricity deficit in Ukraine dropped to 1 GW – Minister of Energy

The electricity deficit in Ukraine has decreased to 1 GW from the 5-6 GW observed during the winter, allowing for a relaxation of power outage schedules, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal has announced.

"As of today, the electricity deficit has decreased due to several factors. Naturally, we are carrying out rapid repairs, for which I am immensely grateful to our energy workers. Currently, the deficit stands at 1 GW—five to six times lower than it was during the winter. This, of course, allows us to reduce the number of outage groups for the public," he said during a briefing following the NSDC meeting on Tuesday regarding the Comprehensive Resilience Plan for Ukrainian cities and regions.

Shmyhal also noted that this reduction allows for "slightly easier" schedules for businesses. However, he emphasized that businesses are already being forced to adapt quickly to power interruptions by implementing their own distributed generation.

The Energy Minister pointed out that the cheapest and fastest method for this is solar power plants (SPPs). He stressed that these must be equipped with energy storage systems to balance the daily schedule during periods of high solar energy surplus.
