Hungary to continue to support Ukraine's energy sector – Szijjártó
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjártó, during talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sybiha in Budapest, said Hungary will continue to support Ukraine's energy supply and will encourage its largest oil and gas company MOL and the power transmission system operator MAVIR to help develop Ukrainian energy.
"I confirmed to the minister that Hungary will continue to support the energy transportation capacities necessary for the security of Ukraine's energy supply (…) In the case of both the transportation of natural gas through Hungary to Ukraine and the export of electricity through Hungary to Ukraine, we do not limit any capacities (…) We [also] continue to encourage large Hungarian companies MOL and MAVIR to help the operation of the Ukrainian energy system at a professional level, using technical and technological advantages," he said at a press conference with Sybiha on Monday.
Szijjártó said since the beginning of the war, more than 3 billion cubic meters of natural gas have been transported to Ukraine through Hungary, and since June 2024, his country has been the largest source of electricity imports for Ukraine, accounting for 45% of the total volume. At the same time, Szijjártó said Hungary, in providing such support, expects Ukraine "to refrain from unilateral sudden steps" affecting the energy supply of his country, and to prevent discrimination against Hungarian companies operating here.
As reported, Hungary and Slovakia stopped receiving pipeline oil from LUKOIL in the middle of July due to the transit ban imposed by Ukraine. Kyiv tightened sanctions against LUKOIL, effectively banning the transit of oil that enters Central Europe through the Ukrainian section of the Druzhba pipeline. The company is a major supplier of raw materials to both Hungary (about a third) and Slovakia (40-45%). Both countries spoke out categorically against such a decision. At the same time, Head of Naftogaz Ukrainy Oleksiy Chernyshov said the subsidiary of Ukrtransnafta continues to transit Russian oil in the same volumes, and the resource of LUKOIL has replaced the resource of other owners.
During the summer, Ukraine imported the most electricity from Hungary (203.5 million kWh in August, 376.8 million kWh in July and 357.2 million kWh in June).
